Samia Suluhu Hassan: Meet the Woman Who Became Tanzania's First Female President

Early life and education

Samia Suluhu Hassan was born on January 27, 1960, in Zanzibar, Tanzania. She is the daughter of Seif bin Hafidh, a teacher, and his wife, Najaat Muhammed. Hassan attended a local primary school and secondary school. She then went on to study development economics at the University of Dar es Salaam, where she graduated in 1986.

Political career

Hassan began her political career in 1988, when she was elected to the Zanzibar House of Representatives. She served in the House of Representatives for two terms, during which time she held various cabinet positions, including Minister of Community Development, Gender, and Children. In 2010, Hassan was elected Vice President of Tanzania, a position she held until 2015.

President of Tanzania

In March 2021, President John Magufuli died suddenly from heart failure. Hassan, as Vice President, became the President of Tanzania. She is the first woman to hold the position.

Hassan has promised to continue Magufuli's policies, including his focus on economic development and infrastructure projects. She has also pledged to improve human rights and democracy in Tanzania.

Personal life

Hassan is married to Hafidh Ameir, a retired Tanzanian civil servant. They have four children together.

Hassan is a devout Muslim and wears a hijab. She is also a strong advocate for women's rights and gender equality.
